President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of Mr. Kamar Bakrin as the Executive Secretary and CEO of the National Sugar Development Council looks to be a masterstroke as Bakrin is reportedly already making waves with his bold measures to reform the NSDC and deliver the mandate by the President.

Kamar Bakrin’s remarkable journey and extensive professional background set him apart as a seasoned executive. With a career spanning diverse industries, he embodies a unique blend of knowledge, expertise, and unwavering commitment.

Commencing his journey with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ilorin, Bakrin demonstrated diligence not only as a student but also as a proactive participant in extracurricular activities. His roles as the Vice President of AIESEC and a key player on the Basketball Team during university laid the foundation for his future leadership roles.

Building upon his academic foundation, Bakrin pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Columbia University, where he immersed himself in the intricacies of business and leadership. Actively engaging in student associations such as the Private Equity Club, Energy Roundtable, and Black Business Students Association, he expanded his knowledge base.

Post-education, Bakrin navigated through roles in finance, consulting, energy, and investment. Starting as an Experienced Audit and Business Advisory Senior at Arthur Andersen (now KPMG), he refined his skills in financial management and advisory services. Transitioning to Colgate Palmolive as a Category Financial Manager, he gained valuable experience in corporate finance and management.

His career trajectory continued at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he served as a Consultant, contributing strategic insights to the renowned management consulting firm. Joining Oando Plc as EVP, Head of Corporate Development, he played a crucial role in complex post-merger integration and synergy realization, showcasing his strategic leadership expertise.

Subsequently, at Oando Plc, Bakrin held multiple roles, including Chief Operating Officer, where he drove a shift to a higher-margin product portfolio and fostered an execution-driven culture. As Managing Director/CEO of Oando Energy Services, he spearheaded the transformation of the company into a robust oilfield services business, highlighting his capacity for leading and driving business growth.

From 2013 to 2018, as Group Executive for Infrastructure/Resources Businesses at Helios Investment Partners, Bakrin played a key role in developing and managing infrastructure and resource businesses. Continuing his impact as an Operating Partner at Vios Equity Partners since January 2019, he brought his extensive experience and acumen to influence the organization’s strategies and directions.

Bakrin continued his service to his fatherland when he joined the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment as a key Adviser to the Federal Minister.

The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) was established by Decree 88 of 1993, now an Act of the National Assembly, Act Cap. No. 78 LFN of 2004, Amended in 2015,to catalyze the development of the sugar industry with a view to ensuring that Nigeria attains at least, 70% self-sufficiency in her sugar requirement within the shortest possible time and even export to earn foreign exchange.

The Council therefore serves as the main focal agency responsible for the regulation of all activities in the sugar sub-sector ranging from production, marketing, importation and enforcement of relevant industry standards in collaboration with relevant government agencies.

The National Sugar Development Council is a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and has an autonomous Management headed by the Executive Secretary who is also assisted by six (6) Directors heading various departments. The Executive Secretary serves as the Secretary/Member of a Governing Board which have representatives of relevant MDA’s, sugar producers, importers and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) etc as members.

The Executive Secretary, Mr. Kamar Bakrin reports also to the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment through the Governing Board.
